VETERINARY

We design for animal care and support. From veterinary medicine and specialty care to shelters and boarding, we want to help you achieve an experience that is comfortable for animals, inviting for guests, and functional for staff. Successful spaces are designed with the animal in mind - supporting technical needs and providing a healing environment that is calm and friendly. Our passionate design team excels at creatively bridging the needs of animals, guests, and staff. We apply our diverse experience to produce the best accommodations for each project end-user.

VETERINARIAN FACILITIES

We have a substantial design portfolio of projects focusing on the design of facilities for animals over the last 30 years. David Potts, our Veterinary Design Studio Lead, has a background in medical facilities planning and equipment upgrades, interior renovations, and new construction for both healthcare and animal care projects. Leslie Hysell, Project Designer, brings 10 years of experience and an excellent portfolio of 13 veterinary facility projects. Our team understands that in any animal project there are two clients, the owner and the animal. The necessities of each user need to be met.

Through DS Architecture’s design process, the relationship between public and private areas within an animal facility is thoroughly developed to ensure proper safety of the occupants and to maintain efficient functionality of the building.

DS Architecture understands the unique requirements for isolation, x-ray shielding, medical gases, and scavenger equipment.

We recognize that when designing an animal facility, it is imperative that the safety of animals, staff, and guests is thoughtfully planned for. Since each animal facility project is different, we work directly with the client to determine the best use of each space. Some facilities may have areas that are open to the public and require spaces where animals can be observed. DS Architecture works hard to create a unique facility that caters to the owner's needs and desires while meeting all of the criteria for USDA, AZA, and AAHA. After all, creating a project that conveys a safe environment for the animals, the visiting public and human occupants, is our primary goal.

FEATURED PROJECTS

CIRCLE OF WILDLIFE

CLEVELAND METROPARKS ZOO

Cleveland, Ohio

As part of the selected Design/Build Team, DSA’s role in the project, as Architect of Record and Landscape Architect, was to work cooperatively with Owner, Criteria Architect and other design professionals to provide, among other services, cost estimating, budgeting, value engineering,  constructibility review,  scheduling and pre-construction  planning throughout the pre-construction phase of the Project, production of design development documents and the construction documents, and construction administration.

HIRAM COLLEGE FIELD STATION

Hiram, Ohio

The task of the design team was to enlarge the existing animal research facility by over 200%, bringing the entire building up to 7,981 SF.   While the correlation between the Field Station’s mission and the purpose of a LEEDS certification is immense, the process of gaining certification for the project was relatively complicated.  The difficulty stemmed from the stringent USDA requirements and of the operational program of the Field Station.  Through creative solutions by the design team on these issues, the project was able to achieve LEED NC2.2 GOLD CERTIFICATION.

AFRICAN PLAINS

CLEVELAND METROPARKS ZOO

Cleveland, Ohio

This expansion project of 3,000 SF. was necessary to adequately serve the growing giraffe collection for the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.  This project created an up-to-date facility to safely house and treat these gentle giants.  The project also included habitat space for white storks and included a white stork waterfall as part of the design.  The site was secured with retaining walls, electric fencing, and high chain link fencing to keep the animals safely contained and to keep unwanted outside visitors, both humans and other species, from coming in.  This public versus private was enhanced by the addition of a public feeding deck for the Giraffes that was designed to be accessible.  As programming progressed, it became clear that a new “retirement” home for one of the Zoo’s most senior residents, Blackie, a hippopotamus, was required to bring him off of display.  Blackie’s new home included a heated 8,000 Gallon Pool and the relocation of an existing 12’-0” long boiler from the pachyderm building.
